  • Description
  • Saddleback Butterflyfish are stunning butterflyfish which can in most occasions be kept in reef tanks. The Saddleback Butterflyfish has a mostly off-white grayish body with yellow extending down from its mouth to its belly. The Saddleback Butterflyfish also have a jet black saddle on its upper back, giving it its name.

The Saddleback Butterflyfish can reach a fully grown size of around 12 inches and needs to be housed in a tank that is at least 90 gallons. Saddleback Butterflyfish are semi-aggressive fish and will mostly only bother other butterflyfish over territory. When adding multiple butterflyfish, it’s best to add them at the same time. Saddleback Butterflyfish should not bother other fish.

Saddleback Butterflyfish are considered reef safe with caution, since they have been known to pick at some hard and soft corals, as well as some inverts which are crucial to keeping a thriving reef tank. As with most fish, it’s really up to the luck of the draw and the fish’s personality as to what level of reef safe it will be.

Saddleback Butterflyfish are omnivores and need a diet rich in both green and meaty foods. Foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, spirulina and high quality flake and pellet foods will really help your Saddleback Butterflyfish thrive in your tank.
