The Thompson's Surgeonfish is a stunning and very rare tang. Thompson's Surgeonfish have a mostly dark blue body with black markings.

Thompson's Surgeonfish reach a maximum adult size of around 10 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 240 gallons in size. Thompson's Surgeonfish are peaceful fish and shouldn't bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. For this reason Thompson's Surgeonfish are great additions to reef tanks. Thompson's Surgeonfish can be somewhat aggressive to other tangs, especially other Acanthurus tangs. To help lower aggression between tang, you should try to introduce them all at the same time in a very large tank. Tangs will also be less aggressive when they are given a constant supply of algae to graze on.

Thompson's Surgeonfish are named after Bishop Museum modeler and artist John Thompson who helped indentify many of Hawaii's many native fish. Thompson's Surgeonfish are strong swimmers and need to be kept in tanks with lots of open swimming room. Thompson's Surgeonfish also prefer tanks with random strong flow.

Thompson's Surgeonfish are herbivores and require a diet that is rich in green foods. Foods like nori and marine algae sheets, spirulina, high quality flake and pellet foods, high quality frozen foods and mysis and brine shrimp will keep your Thompson's Surgeonfish healthy and happy.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Thompson's Surgeonfish and if it's the right fish for your tank.
