The Saddle Wrasse is a colorful and stunning large wrasse found in the waters off of Hawaii. Saddle Wrasses have a mostly blue body with a strong thick orange vertical stripe behind their head. Their bodies also have some strong hints of green.

Saddle Wrasses reach a maximum size of around 11 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 90 gallons in size. Saddle Wrasses are considered aggressive fish and shouldn’t be kept with smaller fish. Saddle Wrasses will also eat many of the inverts found in reef tanks. This makes them a bad choice for most peaceful reef tanks with smaller fish. If you want to add a Saddle Wrasse to your reef tank, please proceed with caution.

Saddle Wrasses are strong jumpers, so you need to make sure you tank has a tight fitting lid with no holes large enough for them to jump through. Saddle Wrasses also tend to prefer tanks that have lots of live rock for them to hide in if they feel threatened and pick at for small inverts to eat. Saddle Wrasses will also sometimes need to burrow in your sand bed, so one needs to be provided for them.

Saddle Wrasses are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, high quality frozen foods and high quality flake and pellet foods should help your Saddle Wrasse grow and stay healthy.

Feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Saddle Wrasse and if it’s the right fish for your tank.
