  • Description
  • The Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea), also known as the Giant Carpet Anemone, is a magnificent and highly sought-after invertebrate in the marine aquarium hobby. It is renowned for its large size, which can reach up to three feet in diameter, and its short, sticky tentacles that give it a carpet-like texture. Its coloration can be incredibly diverse, ranging from shades of green, brown, purple, and blue, often with brilliant iridescent tips. This anemone forms a symbiotic relationship with clownfish, providing them with a safe home while benefiting from the clownfish's protection and leftover food.

Keeping a Carpet Anemone in an aquarium requires a significant commitment and a high level of expertise. They are very sensitive to water quality and require pristine, stable conditions with high-intensity lighting to thrive. A well-established tank of at least 100 gallons is recommended to accommodate its size and provide a stable environment. In terms of diet, it is a carnivorous filter feeder that benefits from regular feedings of meaty foods like fresh fish, shrimp, and squid. It is crucial to be careful when handling this anemone as its sting, while not typically dangerous to humans, can cause a painful rash. Providing a soft, sandy substrate is also vital, as they prefer to bury their foot in the sand to anchor themselves.
