  • Description
  • The Sea Hare is an amazing algae eater and can be a great addition to your clean up crew. Sea Hares will mow down most types of algae including macro algae. Sea Hares have a mostly dark brown and tan body with various dark markings on them.

Sea Hares reach a maximum size of around 12 inches and need to be kept in a tank that is at least 55 gallons. Sea Hares are peaceful creatures and will not bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. Sea Hares have a safety mechanism to release dye if attacked. This dye can cause problems in your tank, so you need to be able to remove this dye if released with chemical filtration products.

Sea Hares need to be kept in tanks that have plenty of live rock and substrate. Sea Hares will spend their lives going over the sand bed and rocks constantly looking for algae to eat. Also the live rock provides them shelter from the harsh lighting found in reef tanks.

Sea Hares are herbivores and need a diet rich in green foods. If there is not enough algae in your tank to keep a Sea Hare happy, you can also supplement their diet with kelp sheets.
