  • Description
  • The Burgess Butterfly is a striking and interesting butterflyfish. Burgess Butterflies have a white body with three thick black bands that develop as the fish ages.

Burgess Butterflyfish reach a maximum size of around 6 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons in size. Burgess Butterflies are peaceful fish that will not bother other fish in your tank, even other butterflyfish. Burgess Butterflies will pick at smaller inverts and LPS coral, so they are not the best choice for reef tanks. Some people have kept Burgess Butterflies in reef tanks, but it’s really up to the luck of the draw on the individual personality of the fish. Burgess Butterflyfish should also eat aiptasia anemones.

Since Burgess Butterflyfish are generally found in deeper waters, they can take some time to adjust to the intense lighting found in home tanks. Having lots of live rock for Burgess Butterflyfish to take shelter from the light can help them get acclimated to life in an aquarium. It will also provide them food to graze on between feedings.

Burgess Butterflyfish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both green and meaty foods. Foods like nori, algae sheets, high quality frozen foods, high quality flake and pellet foods as well as mysis and brine shrimp will help keep your Burgess Butterfly healthy and happy.
