Description
The Banded Moray Eel is an interesting and rather rare eel not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. Banded Moray Eels are one of the more reef safe variants of eel.

Banded Moray Eels reach a maximum adult size of around 27 inches, and need a tank of at least 90 gallons to be happy. The Banded Moray Eel has a brown body with various yellow and white bands on it. Unlike some of the more aggressive moray eels, the Banded Moray Eel has rounded blunt teeth which it uses to eat crustaceans.

The Banded Moray Eel will try to eat any fish or invert that it can fit into its mouth. Since it has bad eye sight, it is a little more difficult for the Banded Moray Eel to catch quicker fish. Caution should be taken in reef tanks with lots of inverts, since some will more than likely be eaten by the Banded Moray Eel.

Banded Moray Eels require a tank with lots of rock, so they can hide during the day and then come out during the night when they are more active. You will mostly only see the head peaking out of its favorite cave during the day. You will need an aquarium with a very tight fitting hood to keep a Banded Moray Eel. The Banded Moray Eel is an escape artist and will climb out of your aquarium unless it is completely locked down. The smallest hole will be enough for the Banded Moray Eel to get out.

The Banded Moray Eel requires a diet very rich in meaty foods. High quality fresh seafood is best to off the Banded Moray Eel. Frozen seafood is not good, since most include preservatives which are very harmful to the eel. Using feeding tongs with a chunk of cut up seafood at the end is the best method to getting a Banded Moray Eel used to eating in your aquarium, and you will be required to use them to feed your Banded Moray Eel a few times a week.
