  • Description
  • The Japanese Dragon Eel is the most beautiful of all the moray eels. Japanese Dragon Eels have a long and slender orange body covered in white, black and brown markings. They also have distinctive “horns” which are their distinguishing feature.

Japanese Dragon Eels reach a maximum size of around 36 inches and need to be kept in a tank that is at least 125 gallons. Japanese Dragon Eels are aggressive fish and shouldn’t be kept with any fish that it can fit into its mouth. Japanese Dragon Eels have terrible eye sight and will eat anything they can get their mouths around. Japanese Dragon Eels have extremely sharp teeth and can also severely injure humans, so you must be aware of where your Japanese Dragon Eel is at all times when working in the tank.

Japanese Dragon Eels are very good escape artists and will get out of even the smallest holes. For this reason it is extremely important that you have a tank with a tight fitting lid and no holes large enough for it to get through.

Japanese Dragon Eels can be added to reef tanks, but it smaller fish and inverts will more than likely be on its menu. Japanese Dragon Eels also need to be kept in tanks with plenty of live rock for them to create caves in and hide in. A tank with not enough hiding place will stress out your Japanese Dragon Eel.

Japanese Dragon Eels are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods. Cutting fresh seafood like crab, squid, fish, scallops and shrimp into chunks large enough to fit into your Japanese Dragon Eels mouth are perfect to keep them growing and healthy. Put the chunks on feed tongs and put them close to where your eel hides. Never try to feed a Japanese Dragon Eel by hand.
