  • The Black Dogface Puffer is a very unique and rare puffer. Black Dogface Puffers have a mostly all black body with white fins and a white tail. Black Dogface Puffers also have a white mouth and various white patches on their black bodies.

    Black Dogface Puffers reach a maximum adult size of around 13 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 90 gallons in size. Black Dogface Puffers are semi-aggressive fish, but shouldn't bother too many other fish in your tank. Black Dogface Pufferfish can bother some smaller fish and eat most inverts. Black Dogface Puffers have also been known to nip at some corals. For these reasons, it is a bad idea to add a Black Dogface Puffer to your reef tank.

    Black Dogface Puffers are well known to have great personalities and even act more as a family pet than a fish. Black Dogface Puffers will follow you around the tank and their big eyes give them an appearance of a dog. Black Dogface Puffers need to always be transferred with a plastic container instead of a net. Netting a puffer is very dangerous. Also Black Dogface Puffers can inflate their bodies to over two times its normal size to scare off predators. Inflating is very stressful on a Black Dogface Puffer, so never get them to inflate for amusement.

    Black Dogface Puffers are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. As juvinles, mysis and brine shrimp as well as high quality meaty frozen foods are good for your Black Dogface Puffer. As they grow larger, Black Dogface Puffers will need more substantial meals like chunks of fresh seafood. Foods with hard shells are the best since they will help grind down the beak like teeth of your Black Dogface Puffer.
