  • Description
  • The Mappa Pufferfish is definitely one of the most beautiful of all the puffers. Mappa Pufferfish have a mostly tan to brown body with a very interesting pattern covering its entire body. Mappa Pufferfish also have hints of gold, yellow and black on their stunning bodies.

Mappa Pufferfish reach a maximum adult size of around 24 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 220 gallons. Mappa Pufferfish are pretty weak swimmers, so they can do well in slightly smaller tanks than similarly sized fish. Mappa Pufferfish are considered semi-aggressive fish, but do well with most other fish. Mappa Pufferfish do not do well in reef tanks since they will eat all the inverts they can find and might even nip at some coral.

When startled Mappa Pufferfish will inflate their bodies to over two times its original size. This is very stressful on the fish, so it should never be coaxed to happen for enjoyment. Also Mappa Pufferfish will inflate if netted, so you need to transport them in an clear acrylic container.

Mappa Pufferfish have a large beak like structure for teeth and really require a diet that has some hard shelled inverts as part of it to wear its teeth down. Other meaty foods for a carnivore like the Mappa Pufferfish are needed as well. Foods such are chunks of fresh seafood like shrimp, squid, fish and scallops will help your Mappa Pufferfish stay healthy and thrive.
