  • Description
  • The Sapo Puffer is a stunning and large pufferfish. Its body is solid blackish blue covered in many small bright white spots. Sapo Puffers are truly a stunning fish to behold.

Sapo Puffers are large fish and can reach sizes up to 19 inches, so they need to be kept in tank of at least 125 gallons. Sapo Puffers are peaceful fish, and shouldn’t bother too many of the other fish in your tank. Sapo Puffers will eat most inverts found in reef tanks and might also take a liking to nipping at some corals. It’s really up to the luck of the draw of the individual fish’s personality with how reef safe each Sapo Puffer will be.

When Sapo Puffers are startled or threatened, they can increase the size of their body to well over twice its normal size. This is meant to scare of predators. Sapo Puffers will do this behavior when netted, so it’s best to transfer them with acrylic containers. It is also not advised to try to trigger this behavior for amusement, since it can be very stressful to the fish.

Instead of teeth, the Sapo Puffer has more beak like teeth. This beak is used for crushing and grinding up hard shelled food. Sapo Puffers are carnivores and need a diet that is very rich in meaty foods. Foods such as inverts with tough shells will help wear down on the Sapo Puffers teeth. Other chunks of high quality fresh and frozen seafood will also make sure your Sapo Puffer stays healthy and happy.
