The Starry Puffer is one of the largest known of all the puffers. Starry Puffers have a mostly white brown with various black and brown spots covering most of its body.

Starry Puffers reach a fully grown adult size of around 47 inches and need to be kept in an aquarium that is at least 300 gallons. Starry Puffers are semi-aggressive fish will leave most other decent sized fish alone. Starry Puffers are not a good choice for reef tanks, since they will try to eat any invert they can find.

Starry Puffers really thrive when they are in a FOWLR tank with other larger fish. When threatened Starry Puffers can inflate their bodies a few times are larger than normal. This is pretty stressful on the fish and should not be done for amusement. Starry Puffers will also inflate when they are caught with a net, so it is better to use an acrylic container when transferring Starry Puffers.

Starry Puffers are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods with a hard shell are best for Starry Puffers, since it will help grind down their large beak like teeth. Other foods like chunks of high quality seafoods like squid, krill, shrimp and clam will also keep your Starry Puffer happy and healthy.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Starry Puffer and if it’s right fish for your system.
