  • Description
  • The Black Banded Cat Shark is one of the most popular sharks to be found in home aquariums. Given that the Black Banded Cat Shark doesn’t grow much larger than 40 inches and is not too aggressive, they are great choices for aquarium life.

Since the Black Banded Cat Shark can reach sizes up to 40 inches, it is strongly recommended that they are not kept in an aquarium any smaller than 300 gallons. Black Banded Cat Sharks need an aquarium with rounded ends, so they do not injure themselves on sharp corners. Also since the Black Banded Cat Shark is a bottom dwelling shark, you need to provide it with a soft sand bed.

Black Banded Cat Sharks are not a good addition to a reef tank because of their large size and knack of knocking over coral. Black Banded Cat Shark will also eat any invert found in your aquarium, which are typically essential in keeping a reef tank.

Black Banded Cat Sharks get their name from their barbels that resemble a cat’s whiskers. They have a long slender brown body with thick black bars. Black Banded Cat Sharks need a diet very rich in quality meaty foods. Live feeder shrimp are sometimes required to get them to eat at first. Over time you can start feeding Black Banded Cat Sharks high quality seafood like clams, scallops, shrimp and chunks of marine fish.
