  • Description
  • The Shovelnose Shark is a very rare and not often seen fish in home aquariums. Shovelnose Sharks have a long mostly flat body with a wide shovel like head.

Shovelnose Sharks reach a maximum adult size of about 54 inches in the wild, but will mostly be much smaller when kept in aquariums. Due to their large size, Shovelnose Sharks need to be kept in tanks that are at least 750 gallons. Shovelnose Sharks also need to be housed in tanks that have a thick layer of soft substrate that will not scratch their undersides, which could lead to infections.

Shovelnose Sharks spend most of their time on the bottom of the tank and tend to be most active in the evening and night hours. Even though they are called sharks, they are not. They were first grouped with sharks due to their large dorsal fin.

Shovelnose Sharks should only be attempted by expert aquarists or those who have dealt with this species before. Shovelnose Sharks are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods. At first live foods should be offered to the Shovelnose Shark, after time they might except prepared foods like fresh chunks of seafood.
