The Black Shoulder Tang is a stunning and not often seen surgeonfish in home aquariums. Black Shoulder Tangs can vary greatly in appearance based on both mood and age. Black Shoulder Tangs can be nearly all black or be a lightest tan color with stunning blue and yellow highlights.

Black Shoulder Tangs can reach a maximum adult size of around 16 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 180 gallons. Black Shoulder Tangs are mostly peaceful fish and should leave most of your fish, coral and inverts alone in your tank. This makes Black Shoulder Tangs a great addition to large reef tanks.

Black Shoulder Tangs can be very aggressive to other tangs, especially those in the Acanthurus family. To try to reduce aggression between tangs, try to add all your tangs at the same time and also make sure that they have algae to graze on all day. Black Shoulder Tangs are very strong swimmers and need to have plenty of un-obstructed swimming room.

Black Shoulder Tangs are herbivores and require a diet that is rich in green foods. Foods like nori and marine algae sheets, high quality flake and pellet food and mysis shrimp will keep your Black Shoulder Tang healthy and happy.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Black Shoulder Tang and if it's the right fish for your tank.
