  • Description
  • The Purple Tang is one of the most stunning of all the surgeonfish. Purple Tangs have a bold deep purple body with a bright yellow tail. Along its body, the Purple Tang has various black markings.

Purple Tangs can reach a fully mature size of 10 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 125 gallons. Purple Tangs are strong swimmers and prefer to be in tanks that are longer and have more swimming room. Purple Tangs are reef safe fish and will not bother other fish, coral or inverts found in reef tanks.

Purple Tangs have the reputation of being a more aggressive tang, and the most aggressive Zebrasoma tang. Purple Tangs will be even more aggressive to other Zebrasoma tangs in your tank. To help cut down on aggression, try to add all the tangs you would like to keep in your tank at the same time. Also having a larger tank and providing ample algae sources will reduce tang aggression.

Purple Tangs are highly susceptible to the disease HLLE (Head and lateral line erosion), more so than any other tang. To try to prevent your Purple Tang from getting HLLE, try to make sure your water conditions are excellent and try adding supplements to their food like selcon and garlic to boost their immune system.

Purple Tangs are herbivores and need a diet very rich in meaty foods. Foods such as nori, algae sheets, high quality flake and pellet foods and mysis shrimp will make sure your Purple Tang stays healthy and flourishes in your tank.
