  • Description
  • The Checkerboard Wrasse is very colorful larger wrasse. Checkerboard Wrasses start life as mostly dull black and white fish, but over time mature into very colorful fish that are mostly green with stunning orange and yellow markings and an amazing checkerboard pattern.

Checkerboard Wrasses reach a maximum adult size of around 11 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 125 gallons. Checkerboard Wrasses are strong jumpers and will jump out of tanks if spooked. For this reason, it is important to only keep Checkerboard Wrasses in tanks with a tight fitting lid with no holes large enough for them to jump through.

Checkerboard Wrasses are mostly peaceful fish and should bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. Checkerboard Wrasses will eat some problematic pests like pyramidellid snails and fireworms. They will nip at feather dusters and some smaller inverts though. For this reason you must proceed with caution if adding a Checkerboard Wrasse to a reef tank.

Checkerboard Wrasses do best in tanks that have lots of live rock for them to hide in if spooked. Also Checkerboard Wrasses require a one to two inch sand bed for them to burrow in. Checkerboard Wrasses are carnivores and need a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp, high quality frozen meaty foods and small chunks of fresh seafood will keep your Checkerboard Wrasse healthy and happy.
