  • Description
  • The Common Cleaner Wrasse is one of the most useful of all fish that can be kept in an aquarium. Common Cleaner Wrasse provide an invaluable service of removing dead skin and parasite from fish. Common Cleaner Wrasses have a long and slender body that fades from silver to blue from its head to its tail. There is also a strong black horizontal line alone its entire body.

Common Cleaner Wrasses reach a maximum size of around 5 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons. They are peaceful fish that get along with most fish, coral and inverts found in reef tanks. Common Cleaner Wrasses can be bothersome to some fish, since they will constantly try to clean them. Common Cleaner Wrasses do extremely well in small groups and pairs as well.

Common Cleaner Wrasses have a reputation for being very hard fish to keep. In our personal experience Common Cleaner Wrasses are fairly hardy. Ours is the first to the nori rocks and frozen food adding to the aquarium. African Common Cleaner Wrasses tend to be hardier as well. If possible getting a larger Common Cleaner Wrasse should also help since smaller ones have tiny mouths making it hard to feed. We feed ours baby brine and mysis shrimp. They will often spit out larger pieces and then kept picking at the pieces until they are small enough. Our also tend to love nori attached to live rock rubble.

We also have a large tank with larger tangs that the Common Cleaner Wrasses will constantly be servicing. We might have been lucky with our Common Cleaner Wrasses, so we still consider this fish a fish only needed to be attempted by the most advanced aquarists.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Common Cleaner Wrasse and if it’s the right fish for your tank.
