  • Description
  • The Pincushion Urchin is a unique and very interesting urchin. The Pincushion Urchin has a round body that is nearly completely covered in long spines. The spines of the Pincushion Urchin can range in color from red to pink and even black.

Pincushion Urchins can reach a maximum adult size of around 8 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 20 gallons in size. Pincushion Urchins are peaceful inverts and will not bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. This makes the Pincushion Urchin a great addition to reef tanks.

Pincushion Urchins will do best in tanks with a lot of live rock in them. During the day, the Pincushion Urchin will spend most of its time hidden. In the evening and night time hours, the Pincushion Urchin will make its way around the tank eating algae on the rocks. Pincushion Urchins are extremely effective algae eaters. You must make sure that your rocks are stable in your tank, since Pincushion Urchin will often knock over loose rocks and corals. Pincushion Urchins are great members of your clean up crew, and because of their spines can even be used in aggressive fish only tanks.

Pincushion Urchins are herbivores and need a diet that is rich in green foods. Pincushion Urchins will find most of their food in the tank, but if you would like to supplement their diet, you can simply add nori or marine algae sheets to the tank or feed high quality flake or pellet foods.
