  • The Garden Eel is a unique and interesting eel. Garden Eels have a long and slender tan to green body with black markings and a large black spot.

    Garden Eels reach a maximum adult size of around 14 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons in size. Garden Eels are peaceful fish that shouldn't bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. Garden Eels can be kept in reef tanks, but they might attack small inverts and fish.

    Garden Eels need to be kept in tanks with tight fitting lids with no holes large enough for them to escape through. Garden Eels also require a deep sand bed that they can completely cover their bodies in. Without the sand bed, Garden Eels will become stressed and possibly ill. Garden Eels shouldn't be kept with large overly aggressive fish either. For these reasons, Garden Eels can be hard to keep and only should be attempted by the most advanced of aquarists or those who have had experience with the species.

    Garden Eels are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Live foods like feeder shrimp or fish will be preferred by Garden Eels, but some can be trained to eat prepared foods like small pieces of fresh seafood.
