  • Description
  • The Fantail Filefish is a stunning and very colorful filefish from Hawaii. Fantail Filefish have a mostly tan body with black spots and a yellow dorsal fin. Fantail Files also have a brilliant orange tail.

Fantail Filefish are peaceful fish and should get along with most of the fish in your tank. Fantail Filefish will eat most inverts that they can find though, and for this reason they are not good fish to add into reef tanks. Fantail Filefish reach a maximum adult size of around 7 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons in size.

Fantail Filefish can be aggressive towards other filefish in smaller tanks. To try to get around the aggression issue, try to introduce multiple Fantail Filefish at the same time and into larger tanks. Fantail Filefish will excel in fish only tanks with other peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. If houses with semi-aggressive fish, it's a good a idea to have lots of live rock for your Fantail Filefish to hide in if they feel threatened. Fantail Filefish will also pick at the rock all day for small inverts between feedings.

Fantail Filefish are omnivores and require a diet that is rich in both meaty and green foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp, high quality frozen and flake foods as well as small pieces of fresh seafood will keep your Fantail Filefish healthy and happy.
