  • Description
  • The Boenacki Grouper (Cephalopholis boenack), also commonly known as the Chocolate Hind or Brown-banded Rockcod, is a fascinating and relatively hardy grouper species found throughout the Indo-Pacific. This grouper typically exhibits a brownish to greenish-grey body with a series of distinct dark vertical bands on its flanks, giving it a somewhat mottled appearance. While less vibrantly colored than some other reef fish, its subtle patterns and assertive personality make it a captivating addition to a properly suited aquarium. Boenacki Groupers can reach a maximum size of about 12 inches (30 cm).

When keeping a Boenacki Grouper in an aquarium, careful consideration of its predatory nature and size is essential. A minimum tank size of 120-125 gallons is generally recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate its growth. As carnivores, their diet should consist primarily of high-quality, meaty foods such as krill, shrimp, and small fish, which should be offered 2 to 4 times a week. They are known to be aggressive and will consume any fish or crustacean small enough to fit into their mouths, so tank mates must be carefully chosen to be larger and more robust. While not directly harmful to corals, their predatory nature makes them unsuitable for most typical reef aquariums. Providing ample rockwork with caves and crevices is crucial for their well-being, as they appreciate hiding spots.
