  • Description
  • The Saddle Grouper is a very large and colorful grouper. Saddle Groupers have a mostly white body with strong black vertical stripes and yellow fins and tail.

Saddle Groupers reach a maximum size of around 24 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 240 gallons. Saddle Groupers are aggressive fish and shouldn't bother larger fish and coral. Saddle Groupers might attack smaller fish and also eat some inverts. For this reason, you must proceed with caution if you plan on adding a Saddle Grouper to your reef tank.

Saddle Groupers will do best in large fish only tanks with other large semi-aggressive to aggressive fish. Saddle Groupers like a lot of open swimming space since they are such large fish. They also will do best in tanks with lots of caves made out of live rock that they can take shelter from other aggressive fish and strong tank lighting in.

Saddle Groupers are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp as well as high quality meaty frozen foods will keep your juvenile Saddle Grouper healthy and happy. As your Saddle Grouper ages, large foods like large chunks of fresh seafood will help your Saddle Grouper thrive.
