  • Description
  • The Oriental Flying Gurnard is a stunning and very unique fish. Oriental Flying Gurnards have a mostly tan body with various darker brown and black splotches. Oriental Flying Gurnards also have huge fan like pectoral fins that it can walk on. Oriental Flying Gurnards also use these wings to glide through the water. Although Oriental Flying Gurnards have spines, they are not venomous.

Oriental Flying Gurnards reach a maximum adult size of around 12 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 200 gallons in size. Oriental Flying Gurnards are also very strong jumpers and need to be kept in tanks with tight fitting hoods. Oriental Flying Gurnards are semi-aggressive fish that will only bother smaller fish and some inverts. This means that if you want to add a Oriental Flying Gurnard to your reef tank, you must do so under caution.

Oriental Flying Gurnards are used to living in rocky areas with lots of rubble, so it is a must that you keep a Oriental Flying Gurnard in a tank with lots of established live rock and preferably a coarser substrate. Oriental Flying Gurnards will spend most of their day going through the rocks and substrate looking for small inverts to eat, or laying in waiting for small fish to eat.

Oriental Flying Gurnards are carnivores that require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp, high quality meaty frozen foods and chunks of fresh seafood should keep your Oriental Flying Gurnard healthy and happy.
