  • Description
  • The Pompano is a very large and active open water fish. Pompanos have an angular silver to grey body with darker fins.

Pompanos reach a maximum adult size of around 48 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 500 gallons in size. Pompanos are very fast growing fish and require a lot of swimming room, so please take this into account when adding a Pompano to your tank. Pompanos are aggressive fish and will go after smaller fish and inverts in your tank. This makes Pompano a bad choice to add to reef tanks.

Pompanos will often school in the wild, but should only be kept in small groups in only the larger fish only tanks. Pompanos will add a ton of movement and flashes of color to large fish only tanks.

Pompanos are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp along with high quality meaty frozen foods will keep juvenile Pompanos healthy and happy. As your Pompano grows, it will require more substantial meals like chunks of fresh seafood, preferably crustaceans.
