  • Description
  • The Niger Triggerfish is one of the most popular trigger kept in home marine aquariums. Niger Triggerfish are stunning fish with a deep purple body with long elegant streamers.

Niger Triggerfish can reach up to 18 inches when fully grown and need an aquarium of at least 150 gallons to thrive. Niger Triggerfish are not considered reef safe, since they will eat some inverts that are essential to a healthy reef system. Most Niger Triggerfish will leave smaller fish alone, but there have been reports about them attacking small decorative fish. It is best to keep Niger Triggerfish in a large fish only tank with other semi-aggressive to aggressive fish.

It is recommended that there be a lot of rock in an aquarium holding Niger Triggerfish, since they are sometimes shy and need rock to hide in. The strong teeth of the Niger Triggerfish can damage acrylic aquariums, so you need to take that in to account as well. Niger Triggerfish also make a grunting noise like other triggers.

Niger Triggerfish are carnivores and need a diet rich in meaty foods. Foods such as clams, shrimp and squid are great to feed Niger Triggerfish. Also smaller chunks of fresh marine fish will also be appreciated.

Niger Triggerfish can add a nice dash of color to your fish only tank, and given the right tank size and tank mates can make a great addition.
